| Terror camps, Pak flags in Karnataka jungles |
|
2 Feb 2008, 0009 hrs IST,MANU AIYAPPA,TNN
KALGHATGI (DHARWAD): Terrorist training camps may be closer to home than the distant mountains in Pakistan.
This chilling evidence came to light during the interrogation of three Islamist radicals arrested recently - Riyazuddin Nasir alias Mohammed Ghouse, Asadullah Abu Bakar and Mohammed Asif.
The investigators have unearthed a thick forest area bordering Dharwad and Uttara Kannada districts of Karnataka, which was used to train terrorists in the use of firearms. The three youths arrested by anti-terror police in Hubli and Davanagere a fortnight ago allegedly received weapons training in these woods which are surrounded by religious shrines.
Sources said this could well be the first time that a terrorist camp used by self-proclaimed Islamist fundamentalists has been detected in southern India, where a spate of terror attacks in the last few years, such as the ones in Hyderabad's Mecca mosque and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, have sensitized police to Islamist terrorism. It exposes a serious chink in the country's intelligence armour but also opens the door to getting answers on why and how Bangalore engineer Kafeel Ahmed transformed into the Glasgow bomber and his brother, Dr Sabeel Ahmed, joined in the UK terror plot.
Investigations led by DSP S V D'Souza revealed that the radicals were taking camping trips to the woods for "initial training as terrorists". During a raid, the officials noticed Pakistani flags flying and had them removed.
The details of the camp have been passed on to Central intelligence agencies. "The existence of the camp and the fact that the likes of prime suspect Mohammed Ghouse allegedly worked for a terror organization in Pakistan through intermediaries is of vital importance for intelligence agencies," an investigating official said.
Not only does it prove that the terrorist network is wider in southern India than imagined, it also establishes links between various terror attacks across the country, including the sensational strikes at IISc in Bangalore, Ajmer and Mecca Masjid of Hyderabad.
Given the sensitivity of the matter, the police are keeping investigation details a secret. Sources said that investigators have spent the last few days trying to establish who was running the camp and who were the men being trained. They are also trying to establish the operation for which these people were being trained.
A local police officer said the three accused revealed that they had established base in Kalghatgi and were preparing for a jihadi strike. Ghouse and his accomplice Abu Bakar frequently visited Kalghatgi along with Asif, a MBBS student. Here they met about 20 young radicals who were being taught the use of small arms and double barrel guns.

Bangalore, Jan 28 (ANI): Two persons, who were arrested by Karnataka Police for having alleged links with terrorist organisations, have revealed that they were planning to attack the Hubli Airport in Bangalore.
According to the police, the duo - a cook and a medical student - Mohammad Ghouse and his friend Assadullah Abbubukar were having links with Pakistan-based terror organisation.
The police also came to know that Ghouse’s father Naseeruddin Mohammad is a Lashkar e Toiba (LeT) operative and has received training in Pakistan.
Naseerruddin was trained as a suicide bomber at Muzafarabad in Pakistan, intelligence officials have revealed.
The police teams from Delhi, Hyderabad and Gujarat will soon arrive in the city to interrogate Ghouse and Abbubukar, rediff.com reported.
The police are trying to get more information about Naseeruddin, who was allegedly involved in the Haren Pandya murder as well as the Hyderabad blasts.
The media reports suggest that Assadullah met Ghouse at a religious congregation in Hubli last year.

Bangalore police have initiated the process of securing the custody of the two suspects Asadullah and Riazuddin Naser alias Mohammed Ghouse to examine their alleged links with those who executed the attack on the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus in Bangalore in December 2005.
Bangalore police have initiated the process of securing the custody of terror suspects Asadullah and Riazuddin Naser alias Mohammed Ghouse who had been arrested by Davangere police recently.
Both the accused are likely to be taken to Bangalore on Saturday.
The custody of the two suspects is being sought to examine their alleged links with those who executed the attack on the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus in Bangalore in December 2005.
Top police sources told Deccan Herald that the two accused are now being interrogated by the Intelligence Bureau, after they were extensively questioned by the police of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The IB team interrogating the duo here, would also join the Bangalore police in their investigations, the sources noted.
Lashkar man
The sources confirmed the alleged links of Mohammed Ghouse, a resident of Hyderabad who had been staying with Asadullah in Hubli, with the banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). Unravelling Ghouse’s other accomplices in the State is the focus of current investigations.
Ghouse, however, is showing all the signs of being a hardcore terrorist. He is proving to be too tough a nut to crack and declining to part with any information, virtually stonewalling the investigations.
The sources said Mohammed Asif, the duo’s accomplice studying final year MBBS in Hubli, would be handed over to the Corps of Detectives (CoD), Bangalore for further investigation.
Asif was arrested by the Hubli police on Thursday. He is believed to be aware of Asadullah and Ghouse’s activities. He is now being grilled by the Hubli police about his links with Asadullah and Ghouse.

KALGHATGI (DHARWAD): Investigators have unearthed a thick forest area bordering Dharwad and Uttara Kannada districts of Karnataka, which was used to train terrorists in the use of firearms.
This came to light during the interrogation of three Islamic radicals arrested recently — Riyazuddin Nasir alias Mohammed Ghouse, Asadullah Abu Bakar and Mohammed Asif.
The three youths arrested by anti-terror police in Hubli and Davanagere a fortnight ago allegedly received weapons training in these woods which are surrounded by religious shrines. They were reportedly being given help and guidance by Ghouse, who had undergone extensive training in arms and making of improvised explosive devices in Pakistan during 2004-05. But investigators say that Ghouse was not the only expert extending help to terror trainees.
The picturesque village of Kalghatgi is normally only disturbed by the noise of heavy manganese-laden trucks from the nearby highway. Local residents are shocked that the terrorists could have used their local woods.
Local leaders reacted with alarm at reports that fundamentalists may have been training in the forest. Describing the news as "shocking", Satish Naik, a resident of the area, said: "I wouldn't have expected it here. But I suppose you cannot think it happens only elsewhere. You've just got to keep your eyes and ears open."
"We have many visitors every year and groups that come for religious activities. But there are no terrorist activities. Police are trying to defame the name of our dargah," said Mohammed Haji, who is overseeing the religious shrine.

| Pak 'recycling' hardcore criminals released by India |
|
2 Feb 2008, 0018 hrs IST,TNN
NEW DELHI: Indicating a serious problem in the working of the prisoner-exchange policy between India and Pakistan, the Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court that the neighbour was always eager to accept hardcore criminals, including terrorists, probably for sending them back.
Additional solicitor-general Amarendra Saran told a bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi that Pakistan was not accepting other prisoners charged with minor offences or those detained for straying into Indian territory.
Saran said in view of the problems that had cropped up in the smooth working of the existing framework on the exchange of prisoners, the Centre was focusing on redrafting fresh policy guidelines on this issue. The Centre was given two months time for the purpose as requested by the ASG.

Exchange of prisoners between India and Pakistan: India says Pakistan seeks repatriation of terrorists
NEW DELHI: A lawyer representing the Indian government told the Indian Supreme Court on Friday that the Pakistani government only wanted repatriation of “hardcore terrorists” in Indian jails “to recycle” them but not of Pakistanis serving sentences for minor offences.
The Indian government’s council, Additional Solicitor General Amarandera Sharan, said the protocol on the exchange of prisoners between India and Pakistan was “not working”.
A Division Bench consisting of Justice BN Agrawal and Justice GS Singhvi was hearing a petition filed by Panthers Party President Prof Bhim Singh that said a number of Pakistanis were serving in various Indian jails for a decade without trial. “Pakistan only needs hardcore terrorists to recycle and sends them back,” Sharan said. “It does not accept prisoners who are in Indian jails for minor offences.”
The petition said some Pakistanis were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir but shifted to jails in Punjab and Rajasthan without being produced in court. Sharan said “an appropriate policy and statutory guidelines or special legislation” needed to be drafted to deal with the situation.
Asked by the bench about the deportation procedure, he said the government had to first have consular access, the rejection of which made it helpless. The bench remarked that it was “very strange” but “not a new problem”. The court granted the Centre two months to come up with detailed guidelines on the issue.

Well done pakistan........if there were some innocent pakistani people, they wont ask for them..Even india wants to send them back coz they might have done some normal offence like"crossing border without knowlegde or fisherman"
but they want full fledged terrorists who are serving in india for terrorism and bombings in indian states....and we indians are so fool that our supreme court even listens to such crap from these people ..I got their intention...they will use hard core criminals and send them back....but those people in pakistan govt have no moral values...that they dont want to get their own innocent people who some how got stuck in india......Pakistan is a gr8 nation..........and our supreme court though naive but it proves our judiciary who are even listening to some advocate who might have been hired by pakisatni agency to get their hard criminals out and later use them back............."
I think it will take pakistan infinite years to learn to be fair and ethical........ |

| Bangalore terror suspect wanted to target US |
|
3 Feb 2008, 0153 hrs IST,TNN
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/2751976.cms
DAVANAGERE: Suspected terrorist Riyazuddin Nasir alias Mohammed Ghouse wanted to visit the United States and spread terror there, he has told interrogators.
Since it was difficult to gain entry into the US, Ghouse had twice pleaded with terrorist leaders to at least send him to Iraq to work as a fidayeen — an extremist who equips himself with arms and ammunition and strikes a target, causing mass destruction.
However, the terrorist leaders persuaded him to drop the idea as they thought "there is so much to do in India".
Ghouse, who was well informed about post-9/11 incidents, grudged the American invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Investigations have revealed that Ghouse visited Mecca thrice for umrah (a pilgrimage undertaken during the non-Haj season), on a family passport that had a validity of 10 years up to December 2006.
He first visited Mecca as a child in 1996. In 2005, during his second trip, he met Abdul Samad, brother of South India's most wanted terrorist, Shahid Bilal, and reportedly expressed his willingness to go to Iraq as a fidayee to fight American forces.
However, his plan did not materialize. In 2006, Samad got Ghouse a fake passport and sent him to Pakistan. While undergoing training there, Ghouse again expressed his keenness to go to Iraq. But Bilal stopped him.
After Ghouse completed his training in Pakistan — from May 2006 to January 2007 — he was sent to India through the Nepal border with a mission: indulge in subversion and disturb peace.
Besides use of arms and explosives, Ghouse was trained in operating computers, reading and drawing maps, sketching and horse riding. "He has a graphic memory and is very quick in drawing maps," a police officer says.
Eastern range IGP H N Satyanaraya Rao says the local police have had a tough time extracting information from him. "He is a good catch, but a tough nut to crack. To question a terrorist, we need specialized agencies. The limited expertise of the local police has become a limitation. To extract one bit of information from him, we have to ask him 100 questions."
Ghouse had planned to blast the Andhra Pradesh police headquarters in Hyderabad. The arrest of his father and brother, and the case booked against him by the Hyderabad police, made a teenage Ghouse drop out of college and take the path of jihad.
A senior IPS officer narrates an argument he had with Ghouse on jihad. When the officer pointed out that Islam shuns violence, Ghouse is supposed to have said: "Jihad is a holy struggle in the name of Allah." The officer says: "After half an hour, I gave up because I realized it would be impossible to convince him."
Ghouse and his associate Asadullah Abubaker, who were arrested in Davanagere district on charges of terrorism, are in police custody.
