| Powerful quake hits northeastern Indonesia |
|
JAKARTA: A powerful earthquake in northeastern Indonesia triggered a tsunami warning Tuesday and caused panicked residents to flee shaking buildings, officials and media reports said.
The U.S. Geological Survey initially put the temblor's magnitude at 6.9, but later revised it to 6.5. The quake struck 210 kilometers (130 miles) from Ternate, the capital of Maluku Island at a depth of 31 kilometers (20 miles).
We have called local authorities in Ternate and coastal areas to warn them of a potential tsunami,'' said a seismologist.
