More Indian Army Soldiers Commit Suicide Than Die In Battle?
More Indian Army Soldiers Commit Suicide Than Die In Battle?

A RECENT ARTICLE over at the BBC News website is claiming that the Indian army is loosing more soldiers to suicide than to enemy action. The statistics for this year alone are a bit weird. According to the article, over 72 soldiers have lost their lives in combat this year, but approximately 100 soldiers have committed suicide. So - what’s going on then?

It seems the key issue is leave, or rather the lack of it. Most experts attribute the growing stress to low morale, bad service conditions, lack of adequate home leave, unattractive pay and a communication gap with superiors. To quote from the article: “Soldiers get angry when they are denied leave and their officers themselves take time off. It triggers a reaction, they are well armed and they take their own lives.”

This one is certainly for the “Weird” category here. Just take a look at the following key statistics:-

Since 2004, 282 soldiers have been killed in attacks.
Since 2004, 408 soldiers have taken their lives, killed colleagues or died after colleagues ran amok.
Of the 408 soldiers, 333 killed themselves ....

2005, 2006, 2007 more than 1000 killed themselves.

Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t this seem a bit wrong to you? Well armed (and trained) soldiers who get bitchy because their leave has been cancelled decide to a) retaliate using their well honed skills, training and equipment or b) kill themselves in protest.

Yeah, exactly! I’m thinking well armed and trained soldiers going postal would be a bit more effective than a bunch of depressed guys deciding to off themselves quitely in a corner somewhere.

Indian Soldier Dies in Suspicious Circumstances

Srinagar, Feb 5: An Indian army soldier died in suspicious circumstances inside his camp at Baderwah area in violence-hit Kashmir.

Sources said that that an Indian soldier deployed on guard at an ammunition depot inside an army camp at Sarna, Baderwah was hit by a bullet. They said that he was removed to army hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Sources said the police registered a case and launched investigations after the other soldiers on guard in the depot said that they don't know when the incident took place. "Police smelled something foul and decided to investigate the matter", they said.

They said that it seems that a bullet has pierced the soldier from the back and came out from the right chest. "Police are trying to ascertain how the soldier got hit from the back side," they said.

The Indian army also launched separate investigations into the matter.

Para-Military Soldier Commits Suicide in Kashmir Reply with quote
Para-Military Soldier Commits Suicide in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 30: Yet another para-military soldier committed suicide in violence-hit Kashmir by shooting himself with his own service rifle.

A police spokesman told that a para-military soldier of 185 Bn identified as Siri Kumar shot himself with his own service rifle inside his camp at Tral in South Kashmir. After hearing the gunshots, his colleagues rushed to the spot and after seeing him in a pool of blood, rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him "brought dead".

The deceased soldier hailed from the Indian state of Kerala and had returned to duties in October last year after two months leave.

The spokesman said that police have registered a case and launched investigations to ascertain the reason why the soldier took this extreme step.

Para-military CRPF have also launched investigations into the incident.

It is pertinent to mention here that Indian army and para-military soldiers have taken several measures to prevent their men and officers from committing suicides. But despite the preventive measures, Indian soldiers continue to take their own lives.

Trooper commits suicide in Kashmir

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in a Jammu and Kashmir village Friday morning.

Police here said trooper Rajesh Kumar of 158 CRPF battalion was posted at Hariganwan village, 42 km from here in Ganderbal district. He died instantly.

Incidents of suicide and fratricidal shootouts have long worried senior officials of the army and the paramilitary.

Long periods of separation from their families, lack of recreational avenues, continuous working in hostile conditions and the lack of command and control have been cited as reasons for such incidents and terror on innocent Kashmiri people.

Kashmir soldier kills colleagues Reply with quote
Kashmir Indian soldier kills colleagues

Battle fatigue has been blamed for a spate of killings.

Three people have died after a soldier turned his gun on two of his juniors in a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The soldier, serving with the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force in Soura in Srinagar, later committed suicide.

More than 30 security men have died in such incidents in the state in the last three years.

Some analysts say the incidents reflect battle fatigue amongst the security forces fighting rebels in Indian-administered Kashmir.

But there is also concern over what is seen as growing arrogance and indiscipline among members of the security agencies which have been given extraordinary powers to tackle militancy.

India's defence ministry ordered an inquiry into such incidents two years ago but its findings have not been made public.

In an unrelated incident, police said suspected militants fired grenades at the Srinagar station of the govenment owned televison channel, Doordarshan on Saturday but did not cause any damage.

Reality of Indian Soldiers. Reply with quote
Well, I think that The main reasons are hide by the officers.

Indian army soldiers are misused by indian army officer.

They are not have a any dignity.

They are treated as a slave.

They being pressed to do more terror against innocent people.

Only their welfare are in papers only.

Another thing is very low pay scale it is not meet with the civil living condition.

Every thing cost goes very high but comparatively the scale is very less.

They are not know their entitilement of their structure.

Directly or indirectly 25% of soldiers of indian army are engaged for officers requirement fulfiling.

British ruling is closed but in army it is maintained very well.

India spends more than one trillian rupee or 25 billion dollars of its budget on military, and most of these money go to Indian Occupied Kashmir where they waste all their resources and their soldiers end up doing suicide, what a wasteful way to die?

CRPF jawan held for terror links in J&K Reply with quote
it is the oldest trick in the book, planting a mole in the enemy camp. Now, the CRPF has found one such suspect within their ranks, the counter-insurgency force hired a jawan a couple of years back who has now been arrested under suspicion of being a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, he is currently under investigation.
Two years ago, Mudasir Yusuf Bhat was inducted into the 183rd Batallion, the main counter-insurgency force in the country.

Police have said that he was a mole planted by the banned terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and his job was to bomb CRPF camps in south Kashmir.

''This person belongs to Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist outfit. He was in touch with them for past several days. He was doing these acts on the directions of the militant outfit,'' said Nitish Kumar, SSP Pulwama.

Bhat was on leave when he was arrested. Police are probing deeper into his terror links. The CRPF has said it will take disciplinary action against the jawan.

''Obviously this is a misconduct on his part. It reflects linkages also. So obviously we will be taking stern disciplinary action. We are hopeful to complete it in a day or two,'' said M S Gupta, IG Operations, CRPF.

It was after a tip-off that Bhat was arrested. The J&K police saved the CRPF from a major tragedy.

Indian soldier slays five colleagues Reply with quote
Indian Soldier Slays Five Colleagues

Indian soldiers are said to be battle weary.

An Indian soldier in Indian-administered Kashmir has killed five colleagues before shooting himself.

The constable, Sanjeev Kumar, opened fire late on Sunday in a guardroom at the army's Northern Command Headquarters in Udhampur, 65km (40 miles) north of the winter capital, Jammu.

He then turned his gun on himself.

There has been an increase in such incidents in recent years, most of which are attributed to battle fatigue and home-sickness.

Shooting spree

Reports say psychological trauma is rife among Indian security forces in Kashmir, who have been battling separatist militants for more than a decade.

About 60 army and paramilitary soldiers, including a dozen officers, have died in similar shooting sprees.

In several cases, soldiers have gone berserk after being turned down for leave.

Earlier this year, an army court martial sentenced a soldier to death for killing an officer who had stopped him and other soldiers from torching a village to avenge a militant suicide attack.

Landmine attack

In a separate incident, a defence spokesman said one Indian soldier was killed and another five wounded in a landmine explosion in the frontier district of Kupwara on Monday morning.

A militant group, Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen has said it carried out the attack.

Authorities say more than 500 people have been killed in violence in Indian-administered Kashmir since the India-Pakistan summit at Agra failed to resolve the Kashmir issue.

The dead include more than 300 militants and at least 100 Indian soldiers

The constant attacks take their toll
