| MODERN HERBAL TONIC |
|
Tonics are herbs that work on the body as a whole, heightening the general tone by improving the circulatory, hormonal, nervous, and digestive system processes. These herbs should be thought of as necessary foods in the restoration of health.
GOTU KOLA (Centella asiatica)
One of the reported "miralce elixirs of life", gotu kola has aroused much curiosity from american consumers. Many consumers confuse gotu kola with kolanuts and assume gotu kola's rejuvenating activity is nothign more than caffeine. However, gotu kola is not related to the kolanut nor does it contain any caffeine. its reputation as a promoter of longevity stems from the old report of a 256 years. LiChing Yun's longevity was supposedly a result of his regular use of an herbal mixture chiefly composed of gotu kola.
CHINESE GINSENG (PANAX GINSENG)
One of the most famous Chinese herbal medicine, ginseng is regarded as a general tonic to protect and prolong life. The word "seng" in Chinese is the equivalent of "essence" in English. According to popular Chinese belief, ginseng is the chrystalization of teh earth's essence which appears as a root in the shape of a mn. Chinese scientists claim that ginseng has positive action as a nerve cardiac stimulant, and increasing metabolism, retarding impotence, regulating blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and improving immune functions.
The numerous studies on ginseng have shown it to possess: a general stimulatn effect, raising mental and physical capacity for work; an ability to decrease the sensitivity to stress; an ability to improve hormone levels; cholesterol lowering activity; and many other beneficial effects. It appears that modern medical research is upholding ginseng's use as a general tonic to protect and promote life.
SIBERIAN GINSENG (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
Although Siberian ginseng shares some of the pharmacological properties of Chinese ginseng, it is actually not in the same plant family. However, the history of Siberian ginseng use in traditional Chinese medicine is as old as that of Chinese ginseng. It was (and still is) used to restore vigor, memory, good appetite, and increase longevity.
Chinese scientists report that Siberian ginseng reduces general fatigue and weakness in 90% of the patient and blood pressure in 60 to 95% of high blood pressure patients. In addition, it releives impotence in 65%, lowers blood cholesterol in 75% and has been shown to increase the life expectancy of cancer patients by 1 to 4 years. Scientific studies seem to indicate Siberian ginseng is superior to Chinese ginseng.
GINGER (ZINGIBER OFFICINALE)
Dried ginger has been used in China and other countries for thousands of years in the treatment of a variety of conditions and as a general tonic. Studies show that Ginger inhibits cholesterol absorption, thus significantly reducing serum and hepatic cholesterol levels in rats that were fed cholesterol. It has also demonstrated significant cardiotonic activity in animals by increasing the contraction force of heart muscles as well as reducing blood pressure.
LICORICE ROOT (GLYCYRRHIZA GLABRA)
Licorice is one of teh most widely used herbs in teh world. It stands second only to ginseng in importance in Chinese pharmacy. The therapeutic actions of licorice have been extensively investigated. In particular, li9corice has demonstrated significant immune stimulating and anti-inflammatory action.
OAT STRAW (AVENA SATIVA)
Avena is used in the treatment of depression and general debility. It is a mild stimulant having its greatest effect in cases of nervous exhaustion. It has a historical use in the treatment of opium withdrawal and has been shown to reduce cigarette smoking in a controlled tiral.
MA HUANG (EPHEDRA SINICA)
This herb has a long history in the treatment of asthma and respiratory tract conditions. it is a rich source of the compounds ephedrine and pseudoephedrine which are employed in orthodox medicine as decongestants. Ephedra has significant anti-inflammaotry activity, increases brain activity, and stimulates the contraction of the heart.
