Information:
Jhelum or Jehlum (Urdu: جہلم) is a city in northern Punjab Province in Pakistan. Jhelum lies on the right bank of the Jhelum River. Across the river is a smaller town, Sarai Alamgir, where the Military College Jhelum (MCJ) is based. There is an old Grand Trunk Road originally built in 16th century by Sher Shah Suri, who also built the Rohtas Fort.The road passes through the city. In 1998 the population of Jhelum was said to be 293,000 however it has risen in the last 9 years.
Jhelum, is the site of the famous battle,Battle of the Hydaspes) between the armies of Alexander the Great and Raja Porus, which was thought to have taken place a few miles downstream from the city centre, along the river banks. Nearby there is also the historic 16th century Rohtas Fort and Tilla Jogian.
The main market area of the city is centered around "Shandar Chowk", and includes "Main Bazaar", "Niya Bazaar", "Chowk-Ehl-e-Hadith" etc.
A cantonment was built during the British rule, which has grown up into a strong Garrison, with an Infantry Division commanded by a Major General.
The city also boasts a high-class golf course called the River-View Golf Club, where national golf tournaments are held regularly

The Jhelum City situated on the right bank of the river Jhelum, here crossed by a bridge of the North-Western railway, 103 m. N. of Lahore. It is a modern town with river and railway trade (principally in timber from Kashmir), boat-building (long time back) and cantonments for a cavalry and four infantry regiments.
The district of Jhelum stretches from the river Jhelum almost to the Indus. Salt is quarried at the Mayo mine in the Salt Range. There are two coal-mines, the only ones worked in the province, from which the North-Western railway obtains part of its supply of coal. The chief centre of the salt trade is Pind Dadan Khan. The district is crossed by the main line of the North-Western railway, and also traversed along the south by a branch line.
Climate
Jhelum is hot in summer, and dry and mild in winter. Average annual rainfall is about 900 mm (about 35 inches.)

Located on the main railroad and road on Punjab piedmont plain, it is an important market for timber, and has sawmills and plywood, textile, cigarette, and glass industries. An army supply corps training center and two colleges are also in the town. The area’s history dates back at least to the 3d cent. B.C. Old Jhelum stood on the left bank of the river; boatmen crossed the river (c.1532) and founded the new town on the right bank.

Dams and Barrages
Mangla Dam, completed in 1967, is one of the largest earthfill dams in the world, with a storage capacity of 5.9 million acre-feet (7.3 km³)
Rasul Barrage, constructed in 1967, has a maximum flow of 850,000 ft³/s (24,000 m³/s).
Trimmu Barrage, constructed in 1939 at the confluence with the Chenab, has maximum discharge capacity of 645,000 ft³/s (18,000 m³/s).
Canals
The Upper Jhelum Canal runs from Mangla to the Chenab.
The Rasul-Qadirabad Link Canal runs from the Rasul barrage to the Chenab.
The Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal runs from the Chashma Barrage on the Indus River to the Jhelum river downstream of Rasul Barrage.

Jhelum, river, India and Pakistan
westernmost of the five rivers of the Punjab, 480 mi (772 km) long. Rising in Jammu and Kashmir, India, it flows W through the Vale of Kashmir, S through Pakistan-occupied foothills, then SW across Punjab to the Chenab River. The Lower Jhelum Canal (opened 1901) and the Upper Jhelum Canal (1915) irrigate extensive areas of Pakistani Punjab. The Mangla Dam and Reservoir (1960) has greatly improved irrigation along the river's lower course, as well as supplying extensive hydroelectric power. The Jhelum was crossed in 326 by Alexander the Great, who defeated the Indian king Porus. The river's ancient name was Hydaspes.
