yes it is haraam to call upon on anyone except ALLAH (swt), if you call upon any of the prophets or saints wouldn't that make us same as the christians who call upon jesus? the prophet (saw) himself turned to ALLAH (swt) at times of hardship or difficulty, he would pray nafil salah and make dua to ALLAH for assistance.
