| Intel to invest over $ 1 bn in India |
|
3 Feb 2008, 1634 hrs IST,PTI
MUMBAI: Global chip maker Intel will invest more than USD one billion in India over the next three years as it seeks to prepare light-weight personal computers in partnership with Indian and foreign hardware firms.
"We have committed to spend over a billion dollars spread over next three years plus. We are focusing on a number of new initiatives for enabling easy availability of personal computers (PCs) and broadband Internet in India," Intel Technology India Director- marketing and operations John A McClure said.
The company is partnering with foreign and Indian computer hardware brands like ASUS Technologies, HCL, Wipro and Zenith for preparing light weight easy-to-use Internet platforms.
"From our India experience, we have learnt that mobility is particularly what even a first time PC buyer is looking for. They want lightweight products, that could run on battery for three to four hours, is easy to store and doesn't take too much space," McClure said.
The company is working on different designs for specific market segments. It is also preparing to introduce Wimax technology in India, the fastest wireless BB technology available at lower cost than optical fibres.
"This is the best technology to bridge the PC-broadband Internet gap in India. With three million broadband Internet subscription against a PC deployment of 35 million, India has the worst broadband-PC ratio in a large market," he said.

Intel already has 1500-2000 software professionals at bangalore campus.........They are planning to increase their headcount to 3000 in next 3 yrs......similarly AMD has 1000+ software professionals.......and they are planning to increase to 4000 in next few yrs..
The Quad core Xeon processor is designed in india.......
there is a tussle between AMD and intel in india ...Intel was initially losing market share to AMD(advanced micro devices)
but later intel came with core dual and xeon processors..............
But intel who had planned to set up a A Fab city but later they shifted to china.......
on the other side ,AMD is helping indian Venture capitalists sponsored company Semindia to set up indias first
Fab city in india............
so AMD is in good chance to get majority of revenue from 2010 after fab is made in hyderabad........
Therefore intel is just showing some of investment in india..............
But indians are not happy with intel............we will buy only AMD coz they are helping us to set up FAB plant.

Intel To Partner With Four Global Hardware Brands, Spends $3 Billion in India On Light-Weight Personal Computers
February 3, 2008 11:45 a.m. EST
Mumbai, India (AHN) - Intel, the world's chipmaker giant, on Sunday announced that it will forge partnership with at least four global hardware firms and spend over $3 billion in the next three years in India on development of lightweight personal computers.
According to company director John A McClure, Intel will partner with hardware brands such as ASUS Technologies, Zenith, Wipro and HCL for "preparing light weight easy-to-use internet platforms."
"We have committed to spend over a billion dollars spread over next three years plus. We are focusing on a number of new initiatives for enabling easy availability of personal computers (PCs) and broadband Internet in India," he stressed in a report by BBC News.
McClure added, "This is the best technology to bridge the PC-broadband Internet gap in India. With 3 million broadband Internet subscription against a PC deployment of 35 million, India has the worst broadband-PC ratio in a large market."
Aside from the production of lightweight computers, Intel is also setting its focus on the introduction of Wilmax technology in India.
Wilmax is apparently the fastest and most affordable wireless broadband technology today.
