India returns body of alleged Pakistani spy who died in prison

LAHORE, Pakistan: India returned the body of an alleged Pakistani spy who died in prison to his home country Monday, less than a week after Pakistan freed an Indian held for 35 years on the same charge.

Indian officials handed over the body of Khalid Mehmood to Pakistani authorities at the main border crossing with Pakistan at Wagah, said Col. Tariq Mahmood, an officer with Pakistan's border guards. His family collected the body there.

Mehmood, 37, died last month in a New Delhi jail and his brother said the family was informed March 4, the same day that Pakistan released Kashmir Singh, an Indian jailed for spying, as a humanitarian gesture.

Indian authorities did not provide a cause of death.

Pakistan and India have a history of bitter ties and they routinely arrest each other's citizens, often over accusations of spying. Many are held for years, usually without trial or appearing in any court.

Arif Awan, a lawyer for Mehmood's relatives, said Mehmood was arrested in 2005 after he lost his passport in the Indian city of Mohali, where he had traveled to watch a cricket match between Pakistan and India.

He was later charged with spying and involvement in terrorism but never appeared in court, Awan said.

Awan said his relatives wanted doctors to perform an autopsy on the body because they suspected he was abused in custody.

Relatives who visited Mehmood last year in a jail in the Indian capital, New Delhi, said Mehmood's "nails had been pulled off, his body bore torture marks and his eyes had sunk," his brother Inamul Haq said.

"We are giving spies back to India and they are returning our people after killing them," Awan said, referring to Singh's repatriation to India.

An official at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad said he was not immediately able to comment on Mehmood's case and allegations by Mehmood's family and lawyer could not be independently confirmed.

i think we should have kept their spy ubtil they released ours. and i dont know why pakistani government is so damn friendly to these spys becasue it was proved in court that he was an indian spy. while our spy just went their to watch a damn cricket game when they arreste dhim as a spy and beat him up in their prisn and eventually ended up killing him.

Excellent! I like this question very much.
Those who are busy to watch STAR PLUS, ZEE TV, MAX and lots of other indian
tv channels even they are Pakistan. But they don`t care at all about this thread/post.

Thats very bad. I mean why they done this with us ? We release their prisoner and in return they give us the death bodies of pakistani peoples. Thats very bad. We need to do something more to protect our peoples who live there or going for vacations.
