its a shame that in a country that is blessed with such rich fertile land, there are food shortages. The food shortages in Pakistan are not due to the population. They are due to the neglect of our farmers for so many years.

The new government should focus more on the two critical probles; food shortage and power shortage. This should not mean that they need to work less on terrorism and establishment of institutions.

The government should prepare, annonce and put into action, within a matter of 30 days, short, mediul and long term strategies to tackle the problems of food and power shortage.

This problem is not going to go away by purchasing 1.5 million tons of wheat for this year. However not much food grain is available in the world market. Most producers and exporters are imposing restrictions on exports. This situation is not going to resolve any time soon. The production of rice in the biggest exporting countries has dropped over the past few years. the shortage on the world market is going to continue for some time. This will push the prices even higher. It will not remain economically viable o keep buying food in the world market.

A substantial part of this problem has to be solved at home.

A global strategy has to be put into place. We need to look into araeas of bringinf all cultivable land into use, expanding the cultivable land, using higher yield crops, reducing wastage of grain, putting into place adequate controls over storage, movement, export of food grain.

The question of adequate water resources is going to need very critical review and planning.

Whereas it is definitely true that the previous government is very largely to blame for not having been awake to these problems, the need of the hour is to try to tackle these problems. It serves no immediate purpose to try to spend too much effort in looking for culprits or scapegoats. Accountability can take a lower preference for the time being.

It would be more useful to do the necessary work now, and work diligently and conscientiously, rather than allow the situation to become worse, and give the next goverment the opportunity to get on your case.

The voters should question and lobby their elected MPs to take action. Similarly the press should play its part to focus the attention of the polity on these issues.

Media in Pakistan Reply with quote
I am disappointed with the media in Pakistan especially GEO. Anchors like Kamran Khan/ Dr Masood and especially Hamid Mir openly show their bias and are forever after the judiciary. Correct the Judiciary is important but never in its history has it ever been without corruption including the judges that have been deposed. Matters relating o the common man are basic food like flour/vegetables/rising cost of living/lack of electricity etc.Ask these politicians who are responsible and they will say it all happened in last 8 years.Hangon - these issues inluding education and health have always been present even during the tenure of these so called whiter than white politicians. We have alwas been struggling with electricity even in the 90s.The question is What are you going to do about it or just complain and make money and leave it to the next party that wins the elections.

Gudges problem is getting bigger and bigger, It is not fair that to save one person's job millions of Pakistanis should suffer. Just leave this matter alone and do something for Pakistani people who need Atta. Rice, Water, Electric and control on prices of everyday use.

hi this is my first post and I choose this thread for my first post. Yes flour and other things are expensive abroad, but the situation in Pakistan is not just international prices. For example the petrol prices here in Japan where I study, are almost same as in Pakistan, and we always hear the news that Goverment is paying subsidy etc in Pakistan. Japan do not offer any subsidies on petrol and they also import all the oil, even the transport cost should be more as compared to pakistn, then how come the petrol prices are same.
