Engagement?which type of Even our Government is not yet engaged.
Engagement have no value in Islam. It is only a custom adopted by us.there is no harm in it if the religious, traditions, social norms & values are respected. But it is better "MUSTAHSIN" if one go for "Nikah" if once decided or chosen.

Basically, engagement is not in our religion..I m not in the right of engagement, if u get engaged with someone then u talk with him/her on phone, u go out together and lots of other things happen which shouldnt be done b4 marriage. The chances of breaking up ur realation gets higher....so I think there should be no engagement , people should directly get married....

Thanx Aimen & Fairy 552 your thoughts are valueable & it is very practical one.if we follow the real way of Islam than we will be successful because behind every forbidden & allowed thing there is a reason & logic behind which we should try to find out & understand. One should not confuse "Bidaat"(Any self amendet, exegerated, self concieved or self interpreted version) with Islam. There is no force in Islam to be married.,rest are our cultural, traditional, moral values & social norms. The justice, logical, practical & allowed ways in the light7teaching of Islam we should take & rest to leave. We should not cross all the limits following blindly western society, they are theirself sick & tired of their society.Islam full allow the women for their likes & dislikes & emphasise on consulting them.

I agree with most of the people here that engagement has no religious significance and should be avoided. Nikah should be directly considered if the two parties are serious about each other. Engagements are borken off too often and this can hurt either one of the parties. So, please be serious about these things.

Dear Ahmet I have already posted my views on this topic but if you are insisting on this particular question of yours than I will say that there is no doubt that the men & women are allowed rather recomended & suggested to chose their future spouses.A girl or woman is fully allowed by Islam to say yes or no.How, one should be a adult when like someone can recomend it to the parrents, guardian or to his elders & if no Sharayi Haib (FAult) in his character should be accepted the rest is traditional & families mindset problems. If a person is recomended to a girl or ask the hand of this girl from the family or elders source,A girl or woman is allow to accept him or not.A girl for this matter within the limit of Shariya "Hijab" in presence of "Mahram" can meet the boy or the man to know about him.Naturally the western version of dating for understanding or courtship is not allowed in Islam. One can ask this question as a Muslim himself, upto which extent we can allow our sisters & daughters to know some one.Are we broadminded & educated enough in this sense to accept their recomended person of their choice. We in Pakistan are handling things not according to Islam rather according to our traditions which is wrong. We can like or dislike Arabic culture but the truth is that it is the nearest to the one taught by Islam. For example asking for Jhahez from the girl side or parrents is opposite to the Islam. In Islam the rights of the women is safeguarded eg.A man has to gift to his wife Dawri & also to pay her MEHR (MOHAJIL & MOHAKHIR) & anyway a man should have a self respect not to ask or get anything from his inlaws. He should be the one to financialy support the family. If we treat the real Islamic way our wives equaly, give them their due respect treat them as companion or friend we can support each other in every matter & we can share the rresponsibilities of every nature with mutual conscent. Many people in thee west raise questions like:why The girl is getting half of the boy as a heir of the father should know that she as a wife gets 1/8 of her husband therefore.I have one advise to everyone don,t judge any religion through its followers rather study & practice that religion practically.See what we are practicing in our daily life in Pakistan is mostly against the teaching of Islam based mostly on our own false interpretations, traditions & customs.
PS:Please treat me as a forum mate I am not a scholar or authority on any issue. We can only exchange our views.
