Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has survived an assassination attempt, officials say.

Two bullets from an unidentified gunman hit his car as he was travelling just outside the capital, Islamabad, his press secretary told the BBC.

Mr Gilani's government is grappling with a growing threat from militants in the country.

In December former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed at an election rally in Rawalpindi.

Mr Gilani was travelling in a bullet-proof car in a convoy between Islamabad and the nearby city of Rawalpindi.

Television pictures indicated that the bullets hit the windows of the driver's door.

Officials say another car in the convoy was also hit by several bullets. There are no reports of injuries.

The BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad says the incident represents a major lapse in security.

Mr Gilani was returning from the city of Lahore where he had been canvassing support for Asif Zardari, Ms Bhutto's widower, ahead of presidential elections on Saturday.

its is real bad i think it is the reaction of what is going on in northern area or it may be the plan of govt to shift the attention of public towards it ..............

All this is so unfortunate. No matter who is behind this, the thing is that our country and our nation is suffering because of what is happening.

Because the people of Pakistan have elected Mr. Gillani to be our PM, there is no need for us to say things like 'this is a saaazish' or anything. Whether it is a saazish or not can be seen from the fact that President Musharraf was also attacked, Benazir was assasinated and every other day many civilians are dying due to terrorist attacks! I think that the threat is very very real and our PM and Ministers deserve much higher security levels.

I am happy that the majority of our educated forum mates are patriotic,loyal & intelligent to analyse situations,incidents & events taking place in Pakistan.This is our duty to educate masses & those in their personal likes/dislikes,because of their wested interests,in their naivety & due to their political affiliations got blind to analyse correctly.

pakistan ka Allah hafiz, both prime minister and president are from the sameterms, hope that they do the best for pakistan once.

SO HE IS TRUE MUSHARAF FOLLOWER

Regardless of who was behind this attack on Mr. Yusuf Raza Gillani, the fact still remains that our country is facing unprecedented times. Unfortunately, not in the better. We as Pakistani citizens, most of us, as statistics prove, uneducated or else, uninformed cannot possibly know enough about the internal politics within our parties and therefore, it is not our place to point fingers or make ill informed accusations. It really is besides the point who the true perpretrators are. The point for us, should be to analyze and to do what we can for the betterment of our country. In my opinion, the root of most, if not, all evil in our country is the lack of education. Sadly, the govt. bolsters this environment and it is in their personal interests to keep the masses uneducated so that they will blindly follow a preconcieved path set for them to tread on by those in power. Any one that deviates from the said path is either eliminated or siilenced by the worst means possible.

Dear All Salam ,

After seeing this kind of news in Media and every where i just go back in Dark 9 Years of President Mushraf when he came and rule the country by force and he shows lot of stuff like this Attacks on Presidental Convays in Rawalpindi etc. etc. and Now PPP is using the same line .....
